SSEN Transmission is responsible for the electricity transmission network in the north of Scotland, investing in and maintaining the high voltage 132kV, 220kV, 275kV and 400kV electricity transmission network.
Our strategic objective is to enable the transition to a low carbon economy. We do this by building the electricity transmission network infrastructure required to connect and transport renewable electricity from the north of Scotland to areas of demand, as it delivers a network for net zero emissions.
SSEN Transmission is owned 75% by SSE plc and 25% by Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan Board (Ontario Teachers’).
The West of Orkney Windfarm is being developed off the north Sutherland coast. With an expected capacity of around 2GW and first power scheduled for 2029, the project will be capable of powering the equivalent of more than two million homes while driving significant opportunities for communities and businesses throughout the Highlands and Islands.
The Highland Council serves a third of the land area of Scotland, including the most remote and sparsely populated parts of the United Kingdom. The Highlands has the 7th highest population of the 32 authorities in Scotland (235,540) while having the lowest population density at 8 persons per square kilometre. The geography of the Highlands is also diverse ranging from fertile farmland around the Black Isle and Cromarty Firth; dramatic seascapes on the west and north coasts; some of the tallest mountains in the British Isles and the largest blanket bog in Europe.
We operate over 200 schools and manage and maintain 6,770.9km of road network, 1,700km of footways, 2,180 bridges and culverts and 100 car parks.

We run Cruachan Power Station on the shores of Loch Awe. Our ambitious £500m expansion plan will more than double the site’s generating capacity to over 1 gigawatt - enough to power two million homes.
Drax Power Station in north Yorkshire is the UK’s single largest provider of renewable energy, generating 8% of the country’s total. It’s set to be one the first power stations in the world to be converted to bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS).
Statera Energy is a leader in the development, operation, and maintenance of assets which provide critical grid balancing support in a renewables-led power system. Statera has developed over 1GW of assets alongside a 16GW pipeline including BESS, pumped storage hydro and hydrogen projects.
This includes our 3GW Kintore green hydrogen project in Aberdeenshire, which could deliver a £1bn UK economic benefit by 2035 and Loch Kemp 600MW pumped hydro project, which could deliver over £60m in economic benefits for the Scottish economy by 2035 and produce enough electricity to power 1million homes.
Wave Energy Scotland (WES) is driving the search for innovative solutions to the technical challenges facing the wave energy sector. The aim is to produce reliable technology which will result in cost effective wave energy generation
