SSEN Transmission is responsible for the electricity transmission network in the north of Scotland, investing in and maintaining the high voltage 132kV, 220kV, 275kV and 400kV electricity transmission network.
Our strategic objective is to enable the transition to a low carbon economy. We do this by building the electricity transmission network infrastructure required to connect and transport renewable electricity from the north of Scotland to areas of demand, as it delivers a network for net zero emissions.
SSEN Transmission is owned 75% by SSE plc and 25% by Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan Board (Ontario Teachers’).

Glen Earrach Energy was founded by Balmac Forest Limited and is working with a consortium of experts, including AECOM, AFRY, WSP, and Alpiq, to deliver one of the UK’s most efficient and largest pumped storage hydro facilities on the Balmacaan Estate, near Loch Ness.
Its natural characteristics will make it one of the UK's largest and most water-efficient energy storage
facilities, supporting both UK and Scotland clean energy goals while strengthening energy security and helping reduce consumer costs.
Our project has been shaped by local input from the outset. We launched early engagement immediately after submitting the project’s scoping report in April 2024 and completed four rounds of consultation across the wider Loch Ness area, well ahead of statutory requirements. This has led to significant design improvements based on valuable community feedback.
Glen Earrach Energy has committed to delivering over £20 million annually as part of its Community Benefit Fund (CBF), on which we are currently engaging to ensure a fully community-led approach. Following
extensive engagement with local and national stakeholders, we recently launched a community consultation to seek broader views on how our CBF is structured, managed and allocated to reflect local priorities and ensure transparency and accountability.
