Murdo MacAngus

Commercial and Operations Development Director - Serimax

Murdo MacAngus is an experienced Commercial & Operations Development Director at Serimax, where he plays a pivotal role in driving growth and operational excellence across the NEU region. With nearly two decades of hands-on experience in multidiscipline pipeline projects spanning Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, Murdo brings deep expertise in both onshore and offshore welding solutions.

A strong advocate for skills development and training, Murdo is dedicated to ensuring Serimax remains an industry leader by cultivating a skilled and reliable workforce. He has led initiatives for training and resource retention, positioning Serimax as a trusted partner that meets the highest quality and safety standards. Known for his commitment to "Right First Time" delivery, Murdo continuously works to foster a culture of excellence and continuous improvement within Serimax, ensuring that the company’s resources are not only highly skilled but also highly engaged and invested in project success.

Dr Mhairi Hay

Director of Curriculum STEM and Construction - Forth Valley College

I graduated from the University of Edinburgh with a BSc (Hons) in Chemistry (1989)
followed by a PhD at the University of Edinburgh (1993). I joined Falkirk College of
Further and Higher Education in 2001 following six years working in the semi-
conductor industry as a Process Engineer.
I was appointed to Director of Curriculum STEM &Construction in 2019 having
previously held the Operations Manager post in the department, and other teaching
related roles within the Science and Engineering Department. Along with the
strategic oversight of the department’s curriculum delivery have experience in
delivering transition training programmes and innovative solutions to local employers
training needs. I am leading on the Curriculum development section the College’s
Transition Skills Centre which is part of the Falkirk and Grangemouth Growth deal
and sit on the Grangemouth Future Industries Programme Board.

Jason Stewart

Commercial Manager - Aberdeen & Grampian Chamber of Commerce

Jason is responsible for the commercial and membership function at Scotland’s largest Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber’s mission is simple, providing a suite of support services to 1,300 member companies, and working to develop the regional economy in North East Scotland.

Jason’s background includes 14 years working in marketing, e-commerce and commercial roles in the travel, aviation and food and beverage sectors, and he is a passionate advocate for creating the economic conditions for success in the Aberdeen City and Shire region.

Simon McCormick BSc C.Eng M.I.C.E

Project Director - BAM Nuttall

Simon graduated in Civil Engineering from Strathclyde University in 1985 and is a Chartered Engineer. Simon is the Project Director for BAM on the Eastern Green Link 2 project and is responsible for delivery of the HVDC convertor stations at Peterhead and Drax in Yorkshire. Simon was employed by Balfour Beatty for 38 years, joining as a Graduate Engineer and leaving as a Contracts Director in 2023 to take up his current position. He has a wide range of experience in Civil Engineering construction in the highways, bridges, marine, petro-chem, regeneration and nuclear sectors. His projects as project lead include, Braehead Adoptable Roads, Kingston Bridge Major Maintenance, ILW and SILWE projects at Hunterston and New Energy Plant at Grangemouth. Latterly, Simon was Director leading Balfour Beatty’s UK Scape Framework.

With previous long term experience in leading on annual graduate recruitment and student placement, Simon is an advocate for close alignment and understanding between educational establishments and the construction industry.

Simon is married to Ann. They have two sons and live in Jackton on the southside of Glasgow.

Paul Macari

Head of Service, Planning & Economy - Aberdeenshire Council

Paul was appointed Head of Planning and Economy in 2020. Under this remit he
leads on all aspects of Planning, Historic Environment, Economic Development,
Environmental Health, Trading Standards and Roads Development.
Paul is part of the Regional Economic Partnership responsible for the delivery of the
North East of Scotland Regional Economic Strategy, the development of the North
East of Scotland Investment Zone and is the Programme Sponsor for the Aberdeen
City Region Deal Digital Workstream. Throughout the duration of the Deal this
workstream has delivered gigabit connectivity in the region, and, investment in 5G
infrastructure and technology to support businesses to invest and grow within the
region.

Margo Milne

Director - Developing the Young Workforce

Margo has over three decades of management experience spanning various sectors across the North East of Scotland. She is experienced in forming, developing and managing teams to deliver against business objectives.

A supporter of DYW since its inception, Margo was previously involved as an employer partnered with Meldrum Academy, a member of the DYW North East board and an Employer School Coordinator before stepping into the Director role in 2022.

She understands the vital role that employer-school engagement plays in helping young people to connect their in-school learning with post-school opportunities, and the vital role employer play in developing those all-important skills for work and life. Margo is keen to raise awareness of the benefits to employers of supporting young people and is a proponent of the Young Person’s Guarantee.

Alex Spencer

Chief Operating Officer - Opito

With over 14 years’ experience working in the energy industry, Alex joined OPITO in March 2013 as an Approvals Auditor. He has since held the positions of Regional Approvals Manager (UK, Europe and US), Director of Operations, and was more recently appointed to his current role as Chief Operating Officer in September 2023.

Alex’s role includes the overall management of six key teams that are responsible for operational capabilities, compliance, stakeholder engagement, business planning and forecasting.

Alex is currently a Non-Executive Director at Aberdeen Science Centre, a Non-Executive Director at the East of England Energy Group (EEEGR) and a Member of Institute of Directors.

Joshua King - Host

Business Editor - The Scotsman

Joshua is Head of Business at The Scotsman. Leading Scotland's national newspaper's coverage of finance, business and the economy with a clear eye to the future of both the paper and the wider sector. Qualified in Scots law, Joshua was formerly Head of Digital Development with the title and previously lived and worked in the north-east of Scotland.

Stuart Gardiner

Operations Director - Hydrasun

Stuart is Operations Director of Hydrasun Group, a leading international provider of fluid transfer, power and control solutions to the energy industry.

He has worked in the Energy industry (Petro chemicals / Oil and Gas) throughout his entire career (since 1993) after serving his time as part of the pioneering multi-disciple modern apprenticeship programme at BP Grangemouth. Stuart took up several operational and commissioning roles during his time in BP Midstream, and prior to joining Hydrasun (2012) had been seconded to BP’s global safety culture team to support their global safety culture-based projects. Honing his skills in fostering a positive safety culture of HSEQ employee engagement at all levels of the organisation.

Dr Su Bryan

Faculty of Science, Health and the Environment - University of Highlands and Islands

Dr. Su Bryan is the Faculty of Science, Health and Engineering at UHI. With a background in ecology, Su is passionate about widening access to careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), Su chairs the Highlands and Islands STEM Partnership. She is dedicated to breaking down barriers for underrepresented groups and inspiring the next generation of STEM professionals. In recognition of her exceptional contributions to higher education, teaching, and leadership, Su has been awarded Principal Fellowship status by Advance HE.

Amy Wiggins

Sector Manager, Energy Transition - Skills Development Scotland

Amy is a Sector Manager (Energy Transition) at Skills Development Scotland (SDS). Working nationally with a focus on the north/north east, Amy re-established the Scottish Hydrogen Skills Group. Amy liaises with Scottish Government, industry and educators who are all working towards delivering a just transition. Previously, Amy worked for 12 years in a higher education careers service.

Steph O'Donnell

Strategic Workforce Planning Manager - SSEN Transmission

Steph O’Donnell is a Strategic Workforce Planning Manager with SSEN Transmission. Sitting as part of the HR team, she works with all areas across the business to combine the work and delivery plans with the skills and people needed to deliver it. In addition, she leads the Transmission Early Career & Pipelines Team which focusses on attracting and developing the talent of the future, on the ambitious and exciting journey to net zero.

Steph has built up over 17 years of experience in the industry with more than 15 years in various parts of Human Resources. This experience is vital to provide valuable contribution & leadership, ensuring SSEN Transmission have the right people, with the right skills and at the right time.

Ricky Saez

Programme Director - SSEN Transmission

Ricky Saez is a Programme Director with SSEN Transmission and is accountable for the SSEN Transmission element of what will be an enduring Joint Venture (JV) Programme with National Grid. He was appointed by the JV Board as the Project Director on the Eastern Green Link 2 (EGL2) project and is accountable for its safe, sustainable, timely and cost-effective delivery.

Ricky has previous offshore renewables experience with Scottish Power Renewables, primarily focusing on the development and delivery of offshore substations. Prior to joining the renewables sector, Ricky built up over 20 years of experience in oil and gas project delivery. This experience is crucial in encouraging cross-industry learning and sharing of the best practice necessary to deliver the projects and initiatives that contribute to the pursuit of Net Zero.

Lisa Williamson

Policy Advisor for Employment and Skills - OEUK

Lisa joined OEUK in August 2024 and leads industry responses to skills-related consultations. She supports ongoing apprenticeship programmes and groups raising awareness of pathways to energy careers and other skills priorities. Lisa engages with the sector and with government to ensure alignment on skills demand now and in the future.

Lisa has over 20 years of industry experience, working in roles focused on people development. Most recently., Lisa managed the Scottish operations team at the Engineering Construction Industry Training Board (ECITB), partnering with stakeholders across a number of sectors (energy, nuclear, etc.) to address skills gaps and support working groups covering topics including project management and those focused on leading complex projects.

Lisa is a Chartered member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), a committee member for a local charity, and a Mum of a pre-schooler & 2 west highland white terriers.

Sarah Hillyear

Head of Business Development - Robert Gordon University

Before joining RGU, Sarah worked for a number of public sector organisations focussed on supporting the energy sector both in the UK and internationally.

Sarah’s role at RGU includes developing and delivering the University’s business development strategy both regionally and internationally. She manages the team responsible for developing commercial relationships and maximising return on the University assets. The team also has responsibility for recruiting the University’s Graduate Apprenticeship places and co-ordinating the delivery of the University’s Upskilling portfolio.

Sarah has represented RGU on the National Energy Skills Accelerator (NESA) Board for the past year, having previously been on the Delivery Group.

Dr Susan Grant

College Strategic Lead for Energy Transitions - North East Scotland College

I have worked in North East Scotland College for nearly 25 years. My career with the College began as a lecturer in Animal Care. Since then I have been fortunate to be employed in a number of roles including Curriculum Manager; Operations Manager; Quality Manager; Director of Curriculum and Associate Vice Principal. I have worked across the region in all the main College Campuses and also with a wide range of subject teams – including engineering; construction; science; computing; business and creative industries. I have also had overall responsibility for leading on Equality and Diversity. These roles have provided me with a wealth of opportunity and experience in education and training.
Since August 2023 I have been the College Strategic Lead for Energy Transitions. This new post is dedicated to developing NESCol’s capacity and expertise in supporting a just transition for the region. Projects include working with external partners – principally ETZ and Shell UK - in the development of a dedicated Energy Transition Skills Hub in Aberdeen and procurement of an outreach vehicle to inspire and inform people about the transition, as well as liaising with industry on a refreshed curriculum offer. These innovations are designed to support the provision of a supply of skilled workers to match the evolving regional requirements of the energy industry and associated supply chain.

Jennifer MacDonald

UK Skills Lead - Shell UK

Jenny has a proven background within strategic skills planning with a particular passion for supporting the Just Transition agenda within the UK. Currently employed as UK Skills Lead within the Shell UK Social Investment team, where her current focus of work is within the strategic development of skills interventions towards the delivery of the UK Social Investment strategy to help 15,000 people into jobs with a focus on the energy transition by 2035.

Prior to this, Jenny worked within the national government skills body Skills Development Scotland, gaining a broad range of experience in areas of green skills and just transition planning as well as sector development activities for the Energy sector.
